Call for Essays
In an effort to initiate bottom-up global conversations on innovations in education, the SDSN Global Education, Quality and Learning for All (EQUAL) Network–co-hosted by Global TIES for Children and Pratham– invites researchers and practitioners to contribute short papers on “One Year of SDG4”.
Papers will appear in a publicly accessible online compendium that will provide a decentralized snapshot of new program and policy solutions, and form a basis for a wider discussion on solutions and approaches needed to promote quality education at scale globally. Select papers may also be published as a collection of essays to be launched early 2017.
Submission requirements:
  1. Submissions must not exceed 2000 words (4 pages). Submissions exceeding 2000 words will not be accepted. All submissions must specify name, designation and affiliation of the authors with complete contact details.
  2. Essays should be country specific. Essays should explain what has changed in the country since September 2015 on education including but not limited to:
    1. new approaches and innovations to programs and policy being implemented on the ground by governments and large non-state actors;
    2. case studies of best practices that are sustainable and have the potential to transform the education systems and improve learning outcomes;
    3. examples of Public Private Partnership or other models that have been successfully used at regional or national scale;
    4. changes in government structure and/or resources to make progress on SDG4, most especially targets 4.1, 4.2, 4.4 and 4.7, including substantial expansions towards national scale of existing policies, or improvement of quality in existing policies and programs;
    5. and involve and give voice to students, parents and teachers towards these efforts, including examples of student, teacher, and parent involvement in these efforts.
  3. We encourage collaborative submissions. Such collaborations could involve multiple researchers/practitioners representing:
    1. various disciplines (e.g., education, economics, human development);
    2. multiple research institutions/universities;
    3. several sectors (e.g., academia, government, non-governmental organizations, social entrepreneurs);
    4. and involving youth and students.
  4. Collaborations may be of international nature. However, the lead author is required to be from a local institution/organization; or a citizen of that country if working for an international agency/organization.
  5. At this time, only essays written in English will be accepted, though we hope to eventually open it up to other languages as we develop the capacity for translation services. Papers must be submitted by August 30, 2016 as a Word documents (.doc or .docx) to 1yearofsdg4@gmail.com. You may also contact the coordinators, Ms. Alice Wuermli and Mr. Samarth Pathak directly with any questions on alice.wuermli@nyu.edu and samarth.pathak@unsdsn.org respectively.
  6. Provide 50-word bios, institutional affiliation, and contact information (email) for each co-author.

SDSN Canada reconvened the network membership on June 16th, 2021 for the annual Members Meeting.

This year's meeting featured conversations on the current state of the SDGs in Canada, emerging opportunities for post-secondary institutions, networking breakout sessions, and a featured joint presentation by the Brookings Institution and Rockefeller Foundation on mobilizing campuses and communities for the SDGs using the 17 Rooms initiative. A lightning round of member initiatives was also included to highlight a portion of the SDG work happening across the network.

Recap the discussion by reading the meeting notes   or listening to the audio recordings for each session.

Meeting Highlights:

  • The SDSN Global annual Sustainable Development Report 2021  was released June 2021, tracking progress on the SDGs by country (Canada ranked 21st in the world). The report outlines the short-term impacts of COVID-19 on the SDGs and describes how the SDGs can frame the recovery.
  • The Government of Canada has released Canada’s National Strategy for the SDGs, Moving Forward Together. The strategy outlines a set of 30 actions towards the SDGs, including localizing the SDGs, supporting partnerships with Indigenous initiatives, and advancing research into the gaps in Canada's efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
  • The 17 Rooms initiative  is a tool for advancing SDG collaboration, community-centric conversations, and bottom-up action. There are three key principles of consideration:
    • Every SDG gets a seat at the table (a dedicated room).
    • Identify what the next step is, and not the perfect step. What are things you can do together over the next 12 to 18 months that you can implement action on the SDGs?
    • It is about conversations, not presentations. The goal is to learn from each other and create a community of practice.
    • Join the 17 Rooms-X Community of Practice to access the beta toolkit.
  • A ‘lightning round’ of presentations by members spotlighting SDG work from Colleges and Institutes Canada, the Interdisciplinary Research Center in the Operationalization of Sustainable Development (CIRODD), Vancouver Island University, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of Waterloo.

The meeting was also a chance to invite the membership into initiatives designed to be more intentional about the network’s collective presence and impact. In this vein, the network thinks that the 17 Rooms process can be a critical resource for campus conversations on the SDGs. It also relaunched the Member Challenge , is starting the ‘SDG Teaching Community’ for faculty across the network, and is convening a small working group of interested members to talk about an enhanced governance structure for the network.
