SDSN AMAZÔNIA


This network includes the following countries and territories:

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.

SDSN Amazônia mobilizes local knowledge in the search for and implementation of viable solutions to sustainable development challenges in the region, respecting the characteristics of the 8 countries and one overseas territory which make up the Pan-Amazon (Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela, and French Guiana).

Education

Disseminate knowledge about sustainable development and scientific discoveries of the Amazon region by online courses (MOOCS), workshops, and communication campaigns.


Contribute to the strengthening of capacities and the training of leaders to develop solutions to the challenges of sustainable development, by offering essential knowledge about the Amazon and Agenda 2030 by the education platform Amazonia-edu.


Promotes education, capacity building, and youth engagement, mobilizing volunteers, youth movements, and youth organizations to contribute to advocate for the Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement.

Awareness and Engagement

Raising awareness of the main roadmaps for the main challenges and solutions for sustainable development in the region.


Support member organizations with opportunities to disseminate and showcase their local solutions initiatives worldwide, such as the SDSN Amazonia Award.


Raising community awareness through social media campaigns on solutions for achieving the SDGs in the Amazon region for the general public.

Solutions


Promote solutions via the Amazon Sustainable Solutions Platform, an open access, free, online, georeferenced and trilingual (Portuguese, Spanish and English) platform.


Integrate strategies and solutions to promote the sustainable management of solid waste and reduce pollution in rivers of the Amazon Basin.


Mobilize and connect Amazonian organizations engaged with the 2030 Agenda and Paris Agreement.

The Amazon, the world's largest rainforest and river basin, faces urgent environmental challenges such as deforestation, degradation, and criminality. In response, the Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) is taking an important step to foster a better understanding of these threats and their impacts to promote participation in developing solutions. In collaboration with the SDG Academy, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and the World Bank (WB), and with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), today, the SPA launched its groundbreaking massive open online course (MOOC), "The Living Amazon: Science, Cultures, and Sustainability in Practice."

At COP28 the world focused on tropical forests, marking a pivotal moment to confront challenges posed by the climate crisis. The SPA, as a central voice for science and the Amazon, provided policy relevant recommendations on key emerging issues through five Policy Briefs and an Amazon Drought Statement.

FAS and Cenarium Network launched the “Pathways from the Amazon to COP28”, a guide that provides an introduction to the United Nations (UN) Conferences on Climate Change (COP) by providing an Amazonian perspective on today's most important climate and environmental issues. Additionally, the guide includes a dictionary of technical terms and acronyms, provides context on key climate issues, and explores themes essential to understanding the importance of COP28 for the Amazon. "Pathways from the Amazon to COP28" is an essential guide for the Amazonian public that wants to stay abreast of the 2023 edition of the largest climate event in the world. The open-access publication is available in both English and Spanish.
