Supporting SDG Progress in Uzbekistan Through Data and Scientific Modeling
The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s (SDSN) SDG Transformation Center recently returned to Uzbekistan for a four-day visit to present the results of a two-year collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan (MoEF), supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
The SDSN presented work across three areas:
- Tracking territorial gaps in SDG implementation: New insights from the subnational SDG Index, covering Uzbekistan’s 12 regions, the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan, and the independent city of Tashkent.
- Exploring sustainable land-use pathways to 2050: Applying the FABLE Consortium’s modeling approach to examine long-term land-use challenges, including water access and irrigation, amid projected population growth from 39 million today to 52 million by 2050.
- Strengthening the science-policy interface: Mobilizing academics and practitioners across Uzbekistan, including through the newly established SDSN Uzbekistan, co-chaired by the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies and the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.
A key milestone of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between SDSN and the MoEF, formalizing their commitment to strengthen cooperation on sustainable development.
Together, these efforts reflect the SDG Transformation Center’s work to advance evidence-based policymaking through data, scientific modeling, and national partnerships, helping translate sustainable development ambitions into action across Uzbekistan.
