Capacity Building for Energy Transition in Africa: Issue Brief
Africa’s energy transition requires more than new infrastructure and finance. It requires strong local expertise, resilient institutions, and training systems capable of preparing the engineers, technicians, educators, entrepreneurs, and policymakers needed to drive implementation at scale. This issue brief argues that capacity building must be treated as a strategic foundation for delivering affordable, reliable, and sustainable clean energy across the continent. It highlights current skills gaps, reviews lessons from existing initiatives, and proposes priority actions to strengthen education, technical training, institutional coordination, and workforce inclusion. By aligning skills development with continental energy ambitions, Africa can expand opportunity, reduce dependency on external expertise, and build a more just, inclusive, and locally anchored clean energy future.
